Plans for oval upgrade a boost for footy club

Magpies welcome big revamp

THERE’S nothing quite so dispiriting for keen young footballers than hanging out all week for a match or training session only to have it cancelled because of a waterlogged pitch.

But that should become a winter rarity rather than a commonplace event for hundreds of kids at the Western Suburbs Junior Australian rules club.

It will be among those to benefit from CanterburyBankstown Council plans for a $2.5 million upgrade of Wagener Oval in Ashbury, its home ground.

The club’s 280 players, boys and girls aged 5-17, missed six weeks of training because of prolonged wet weather, and their matches had to be transferred to Picken Oval at Croydon Park.

But that should become a thing of the past, thanks to a major revamp of the oval’s surface and drainage, increased lighting, additional landscaping and community space.

Work will start later this month, and could take up to six months.

Club president Brian Neiser said: “I’m absolutely rapt. I’ve been at the club since 1975, and we have been chasing this for years.

“During the wet weather, we had a gym set up in the training sheds, with punching bags, skipping ropes and chin-up bars, and we were training in the carpark. It was the best we could do.

“We are really looking forward to playing on a surface that drains a lot better, is well lit and will give kids an opportunity to shine.

“We will be able to spread matches into Friday nights.”

The oval is also used by Ashbury Public and Trinity Grammar schools.

Once the upgrades are completed, other clubs and schools will have the chance to use the oval.

Council administrator Richard Colley said it was time renovations were made to one of the area’s most important community assets.

“Wagener Oval has been the centrepiece of the Ashbury community since the ‘60s, and is beloved by our community, families and sporting clubs,” Mr Colley said.

Western Suburbs Junior Australian Football Club are excited to announce the $2.5 million upgrade of W.H Wagener Oval, Ashbury

Work being undertaken as part of the $2.5 million upgrade:

• Laying of new turf;
• Installation of new drainage and irrigation;
• Lighting Upgrades;
• Landscaping, including the planting of additional vegetation.

Timing:

Work will commence early May and is anticipated to be completed in August 2017 –weather permitting.

A grass establishment period will follow from September to November 2017

Altered Conditions:

Wagener Oval will be closed up until November and Whitfield Reserve will be closed until September.

Although careful consideration is being given to limit the project’s impact on the surrounding community, noise from the use of heavy machinery, material transportation by truck, reduced on-street parking and dust are unavoidable when undertaking major work
such as this.

To reduce the impact of construction, work hours will be:

Monday to Friday 7am-6pm
Saturdays 7am-1pm.

THANKS

The club would not exist without the contribution of the many parents who volunteer and help their children to play this great game.  Thanks to you all for taking on the roles of coach, manager, assistant coach, ground manager, committee members (president, vice president, secretary etc), first aiders,  Emergency Response Coordinators, boundary umpires, goal umpires, runners, water carriers, canteen helpers, BBQ chefs, equipment stewards, fund raising, uniform washer, etc.  It is your support that helps our kids succeed, learn sportsmanship and have fun.
